Arguably one of the most significant medieval works of art in history, the Bayeux Tapestry, a 230-foot-long embroidered cloth depicting the Norman conquest of England and the Battle of Hastings, is officially on display in England. The historical piece is currently open to the public at British Museum in London.
The tapestry made the journey from Bayeux Tapestry Museum in Bayeux, France, where it has been on display since 1983. As the museum undergoes renovations (slated to reopen in October 2027), the tapestry resides in London for a limited time … and the move is momentous. For one, the Bayeux Tapestry has never traveled outside of France in its history since being constructed.
While its origins and artists remain up for debate, it’s unarguable in the moments it depicts.
The tapestry highlights some of England’s most pivotal points in history. It detailed the end of an entire era in England and the start of an entirely new age.
William, Duke of Normandy, crossed the English Channel and invaded England in 1066 at the Battle of Hastings, defeating Harold Godwinson, the last Anglo-Saxon king of England. William then became King William I, better known as William Conqueror, and, during his reign, he built many castles and keeps across the country, including the central keep of Tower of London, which still stands today and can be visited.
The Bayeux Tapestry will remain on display in the British Museum until July 11, 2027. Visit here for the next ticket release.
