Marathons in general are not for the lighthearted, and adding an element of adventure can make them intense as well as unforgettable. Adventure marathons are for extreme runners that want to have a unique 26.2-mile experience.

The list of this year’s adventure marathons leaves few corners of the world un-traveled. With the Great Wall of China Marathon in May and The Big Five race in June, it will be a busy summer for runners.

The Big Five is one of the more wild adventure marathons as the race takes place through the African savannah. Without any fencing or barriers between the runner and the African game that populates the area, this marathon is sure to stun and amaze. With elephants, rhinos, buffalo, leopards and lions present during the event and the African sun beating down in June, there will be enough elements for runners to combat against for one lifetime.

For those who need more time there is the epic Petra Desert Marathon in September, Polar Circle Marathon in October and Bagan Temple Marathon in November. Each marathon will tempt and entice adventure seekers and travel enthusiasts with this broad range of fun, challenging runs.

An adventure marathon is a commitment and a testament of will and strength, but definitely an experience of a lifetime. Registration opens, fills up and closes early so dedicated runners will have to act fast.
