With the departure of Meridiana Airlines from Italy’s skies, the country made way for a new airline, Air Italy. Air Italy is essentially Meridiana, but with a rebrand that includes a new color scheme and newly painted planes.
Air Italy is owned by Qatar Airways, indicated by the purple color on the refurbished aircraft. Since its acquisition in 2017, Qatar Airways focused on reinventing the Mediterranean airline and invested both financially and with equipment in the way of new planes. With the planned addition of 20 new jets and five wide-body jets, Air Italy is slated to become a domestic rival of Alitalia.
The new airline also set lofty goals of welcoming 10 million passengers per year by 2022, by offering flights both into, out of and within Italy. Air Italy will be primarily based at Milan’s Malpensa Airport. The first domestic destinations to debut in May and June will include flights from Milan to Naples (NAP), Palermo (PMO), Catania (CTA) and Rome (FCO) for fares as low as $90 per direction. International destinations will include New York (JFK) (daily flights); Miami (MIA) (four flights per week); Sharm El-Sheikh, Egypt (SSH); and Havana, Cuba (HAV). Base fares for long-haul flights will start at $475 for a round-trip ticket.
