Eating on the go has a history of being quite unhealthy, especially with the prevalence of fast food options at train stations, airports and other travel-centric locations. Despite menus of fried chicken, cheesy burgers and jumbo-sized sodas, there are a few slightly healthy options fast travelers can grab and go before their next flight. Read on for some of the healthier food choices at any airport’s usual suspects of fast food joints.
Starbucks
The coffee chain serves healthy pre-made bowls that feature a mixture of fiber, protein and vitamins through vegetables like beets, broccoli and kale. At 430 calories, the Hearty Veggie and Brown Rice Salad Bowl is one of the more filling and definitely more healthy selections among the cookies and sugary loaves that fill the food display case.
Kentucky Fried Chicken
Although KFC has become a national treasure for its perfectly fried chicken, the fast food chain now sells the same buckets and sandwiches but with grilled chicken instead. Three pieces of the grilled chicken (breast, thigh and drumstick) total 480 calories and 73 grams of protein. Healthy sides include green beans, corn or mashed potatoes for a dose of veggies.
Einstein Bros. Bagel
This national bagel chain makes it easy to order healthy with their separate menu of bagel toppings that have 25 percent reduced fat and select egg sandwiches labeled as thintastic. Sandwiches and bagels can also be served on thinner bread or a multigrain roll instead of high-carb, fluffy bagels. Opt for the asparagus, mushroom and egg white sandwich with an optional slice of Swiss cheese.
McDonald´s, Burger King, Wendy´s, etc
At big-name fast food chains, keeping it simple is the best plan of action. Stick with a single burger patty topped with vegetables, no cheese and a very small amount of sauce. See if you can switch out fries for a healthier option like a side salad or chili.
