Airports can be one of two types of places: a relaxing haven of luxury in which to decompress between long flights or a throng-heavy nightmare to navigate during your 15-minute window to catch your connecting flight. Whether time is on your side or you barely have a second to veto the long line at Starbucks, sometimes you just need nourishment, especially when traveling for hours (or days) at a time. Here’s how to make healthy food choices among the Auntie Anne’s and Dunkin Donuts of the terminal.
Plan ahead
We all know that no plane lands and releases its customers right away. If you’re facing a considerable layover, use the de-boarding time to think about what you will want to eat during that time. Chances are, your connecting airport will have at least two options: a coffee shop of some sort and a convenience-type store. The former may have offerings like yogurt parfaits, whole grain muffins and some may even have fruit and small sandwiches. Check out the convenience store where you’ll probably find nuts, energy bars, trail mix and other small snacks on which to nosh or save for the next flight.
Make the most of your time
If your plane lands a more appropriate hour when most food shops are open, your options multiply. Gauge your hunger wisely and think about what you might want before the delicious aromas from the pizzeria trap you. Protein, healthy fats and whole grains are the best way to fill your tank until the next meal, whenever and wherever that may be. Opt for a turkey and avocado sandwich from Au Bon Pain, where you can also build your own sandwich or salad from their healthy ingredients. The more control you have over what goes into your body, the healthier choices you have.
