Tips / Destination

Alaska’s largest city is renowned for its cultural sites and exceptional natural beauty, and the autumn season is one of the best times of year to visit.

Beginning in September, the Northern Lights return for some of the best viewing of the year. October is one of the best times for wildlife spotting, and several glacier and wildlife cruises set out through Kenai Fjords National Park and Prince William Sound. To experience some of the world’s most vibrant fall foliage, take a ride on the Alaska Railroad or go for a hike in Lake Clark and Katmai national parks.

In addition to its natural bounty, Anchorage is Alaska’s cultural hub, home to world-renowned music events, Broadway hits at the Anchorage Concert Association and local theater productions at the Alaska Center for the Performing Arts and the Alaska Experience Theatre. Catch Cinderella on stage Oct. 24–29, Storm Large Nov. 4, and The Nutcracker Nov. 24–26.

The Anchorage Museum is a must-visit in this fall. In September, the museum opened a new, permanent Alaska history gallery and cut the ribbon on a $24 million expansion project, which added galleries for art collections. The new gallery will showcase the North from a fresh perspective through its new Rasmuson Wing, the Art of the North galleries and expanded Discovery Center.
