Tucked away from the hustle and bustle of Bourbon Street in the French Quarter, Antoine’s Restaurant is one of New Orleans’ grand dame restaurants. Opened in 1840, the restaurant specializes in French-Creole fine dining.

We arrived ahead of our reservation to have a pre-dinner drink in the adjoining Hermes Bar. I ordered a glass of Prosecco as we stood at a high-top table near the bar. Shortly after, we made our way into the main dining room to begin our meal.

The restaurant was still decked out in Christmas decorations, as we visited just after the holiday, giving an extra festive feel to our experience. Our group of six was seated immediately and we began perusing the menu. Our friendly waitress came over with bread and to take drink orders and discuss the menu. We ordered oysters Rockefeller and puffed potatoes for the table to start. I ordered gulf fish amandine as my main with a salad on the side. We added creamed spinach and corn casserole as sides for the table.

The starters arrived quickly. The potatoes were light and crunchy with a flavorful, creamy dipping sauce. The oysters were prepared differently than I expected, chargrilled and topped with a spinach sauce. I enjoyed the oyster but could have done without the spinach sauce. My salad arrived next. It was very simple, but a nice change from some of the heavier dishes I experienced during my stay. Next up, our entrées. My fried fish was topped with almonds and a lemon sauce. It was filling and I could not eat the entire portion. The corn casserole was one of the standouts of the meal.

Instead of dessert, we ordered Antoine’s signature Café Brulot, a hot, spiced coffee flamed with brandy tableside. It was a one-of-a-kind after-dinner drink experience!

Our waitress encouraged us to explore the many dining rooms of the historic restaurant after our meal. Luckily, she had a few free minutes when we finished and she took us around, telling us stories about the iconic restaurant. It was a perfect way to end our experience at Antoine’s.
