Just before my first trip abroad several years ago, I was told by a friend to give my credit card company and bank a call and notify them I was headed off to Europe, so any foreign transactions I made would not be declined.
As one trip abroad turned into many, I learned some other things one should ask their bank before taking a trip to a foreign nation.
Ask your credit card company if your card will work in the country or countries to which you plan on traveling. Also, ask what the fees are for withdrawals or purchases made abroad. It can be a percentage, a flat fee or both, so be sure to get the details.
There are also currency conversion or other foreign transaction fees that can be tacked on by your bank, which makes asking them for the specifics important for your wallet. Also, ask your bank/credit card company what your liability may be in the event that your debit/credit card is lost or stolen. Ensure you have the right number to call in the event of such an emergency, as well.
Some other things you may want to ask are if there are daily limits for ATM withdrawals and if your bank has a partner bank in your destination that you can use without incurring fees.
