On a recent trip to Lima, Peru, I had the privilege of dining at Gastón Acurio’s original Astrid y Gastón, in Miraflores.
Over the course of the night, we were treated to five courses, each with a paired wine. As a vegetarian, I did not eat most of the standard menu; however, the team at the restaurant made sure every course was represented in some way so I didn’t miss out.
At the onset of every course, the server explained what it was. Once he finished, a sommelier told us exactly what kind of wine we were drinking and why he selected it to pair with the specific course. Wines ranged from a sparkling wine to a few reds, whites and even an orange wine.
Every course perfectly complemented those that immediately preceded them and went well with the selected wines.
The atmosphere inside Astrid y Gastón is one to be relished. Soft lighting lets guests relax with their drink and company while the food is prepared. More than that, I felt comfortable and welcome during the entire time in the restaurant. There were a few dishes I had questions about, and the servers and sommelier were more than happy to answer any and every question I had.
I was especially impressed with the time and effort that apparently went into accommodating my vegetarian food. It was a greatly appreciated touch.
