Avoiding Bed Bugs While on the Road

There are lots of things you want to bring back with you after a trip — a few souvenirs, memories, photos, a renewed outlook on life — but you definitely want to leave one thing far, far behind. Bed bugs are annoying, gross and altogether unwelcome on any trip and if you’re unlucky enough to encounter them (which can happen at even the most luxurious hotels, unfortunately), the last thing you want is for them to hop a ride back home with you.

How can you ensure they stay far, far away?

The non-profit Pest Control Operators of California recently offered some advice. “Throughout the state, we’re seeing a tremendous rise in bed bug infestations and how they disrupt the lives of our customers,” said Chris Reardon, executive director, PCOC. “Because of this, we want to raise awareness about this issue so people don’t inadvertently bring these nasty insects home from vacations.”

First, inspect your room as soon as you arrive. Even if things look clean, inspect your mattress just in case, especially around the seams, box springs and hidden corners.

Then, never keep your luggage on the bed. Instead, use the luggage rack provided by the hotel, or put your luggage in the bathroom, where the hard surfaces are less attractive to bed bugs.

Speaking of luggage, opt for a hard-shell suitcase, which also has less of a chance of attracting a curious critter.

If bed bugs do come across your luggage, they’re more likely to be attracted to shoes and dark clothing. If possible, pack your belongings in resealable, plastic bags.

In case bed bugs do make it home with you, take an extra step of precaution and wash your laundry as soon as you get home from a trip.
