Trends / Unique Itineraries & Tours

Throughout history, shamans used a potent brew known as ayahuasca in various South American communities. The use of the brew is most common among groups in the Amazon rainforest. These days, the most popular places for tourists to try ayahuasca are Peru, Bolivia, Colombia and Brazil.

Traditionally, the brew is used to communicate with spirits as part of shamanic rituals. However, many people now claim ayahuasca can induce moments of life-changing clarity, ending long-standing addictions and providing a renewed focus.

While many ayahuasca pilgrims do travel in the hope of having an enlightening experience, others see ayahuasca as a drug due to its strong hallucinogenic properties. Herein lies some of the danger that has resulted in several high-profile deaths in recent years.

Ayahuasca ceremonies should be carried out by a shaman, who prepares the brew himself and understands his responsibility. However, increased demand led to an explosion of unscrupulous tour operators who offer ayahuasca experiences without proper supervision.

Several tourists have died after taking ayahuasca, and many people believe the chaotic nature of the current situation could lead to further tragedy. If you are interested in taking ayahuasca for whatever reason, it is essential you find a trustworthy shaman that will take proper care of you during what can be an incredibly powerful experience.

Try to find a local shaman who comes with good recommendations from fellow travelers and avoid large group tours. Do some research about preparing yourself to take ayahuasca, including a diet that must be followed for up to a week prior and don’t go with any shaman that doesn’t tell you how to prepare yourself properly.
