Barcelona has no shortage of outdoor space: The coastal city sits between the Mediterranean Sea and the hills of Catalonia, and is an outdoors lovers’ paradise. One of the best ways to enjoy inexpensive local food under the Spanish sun is to purchase your own jamón and manchego cheese, and dine al fresco at one of the spots below.
The Beach
A picnic on the beach is an obvious choice. More than 100 kilometers of sand and sea are available for blankets and bottles of cava with endless views of the Mediterranean. Free yourself from the raucous crowds of the city by heading north or south via train to the tamer neighboring beaches.
Montjuic
Mix views of the city with vast sea sights and a natural setting, and a picnic atop the mountain makes for a memorable experience. Bring your own fixings or fill up at the small shack restaurant located behind the mountain´s castle. Picnic tables peer over the cliffs toward the sea for perfect views.
Parc Ciutadella
For a potentially more social experience, perch on a patch of grass at the city´s main park. Soak up music from the guitarist a few blankets away or watch acrobats balance on rubber bands tied between two trees. The after-work crowd flocks to the park for a BYOB happy hour.
