Catalonia’s second-largest city (after Barcelona) is located just 90 minutes north of the Catalan capital, but Girona has made a name for itself in terms of coastal beauty and some of the world´s best food. Visit Girona on the cheap using the tips below.
Take a trip back to the Middle Ages by strolling through Girona´s Jewish Quarter. Marvel in the centuries-old homes and restaurants as you weave through and get lost in the tiny alleyways.
Continue your self-guided walking tour with a romp across the Onyar River. The river divides Girona into the old town and the new town, and its bridges are prime photo opportunities.
For an entrance fee of only €2, visit the Arab baths of Girona, dating to the 12th century. The baths combine elements of Roman and Arabic design, and are a feat of innovative construction.
A trip to Girona would not be complete without a stop at the Girona Cathedral, viewable from most places in the city. There is a suggested donation to enter the cathedral, but the towering religious monument is just as magnificent to admire from the outside.
When it’s time to refuel after a day of walking, head to Plaça del Vi for some authentic Spanish tapas with a bit of Basque influence at Zampanzar, or relax in the historical setting of Le Bistrot with classic Catalan dishes in a cozy atmosphere. Le Bistrot offers a menu of a main dish, bread, dessert and a drink for only €17 (about $18.50).
