Libraries aren’t just a place to check out new books. There are libraries throughout the country worth a visit simply to experience the building’s stunning architecture. These are our favorites.
While there are dozens of branches of the New York Public Library, the Stephen A. Schwarzman Building is one of the most beautiful in the city. You’ll recognize the building’s iconic marble lions from the opening scene of Ghostbusters (1984).
Seattle Public Library-Central Library
The 11-story building underwent an extensive redesign, reopening in 2004. The diamond-shaped exterior is made of glass and steel, for a stunning view. There are more than 20 other branches throughout the city.
The research library located on The Johns Hopkins University campus in Baltimore features a large, open-air atrium. The building is available to rent for events. It is especially popular for weddings.
Boston’s Central Library branch is made up of two buildings in Copley Square. Constructed in 1895, the branch houses an expansive reading room with wooden tables and green lamps.
Part of the Scottsdale library system, this modern library opened in 2007. The building’s design reflects the Arizona natural landscape with a sloping roof and exterior weather steel plates. The building holds a LEED Silver Certification and boasts drive-up windo
