Tips / Travel

Bicycle commuting is good for your health, good for the planet and good for your wallet. While the idea of pedaling to work may seem intimidating, these tips will help make your commute a smooth ride.

Map Your Route

Get familiar with your route and take a test ride. It’s always a good idea to make sure your bike route has bike lanes before you’re on your way to work. Familiarize yourself with bicycle laws in your state. You should already be a pro at hand signals, but some states have additional rules about when and where bikes can ride.

Maintain Your Cycle

Your bicycle should be in good working order — tires inflated, brakes working and seat adjusted — before you hit the road.

Invest in Accessories

A helmet is not an option and, in most states, required by law. Additional safety accessories such as a front and rear light and reflectors are a safe bet. Handlebar- or helmet-mounted rearview mirrors are especially helpful when riding on busy streets or at night.

Tote Your Stuff

Consider a basket or back rack for carrying larger items. Invest in a backpack or sturdy shoulder bag; side bags can leave you feeling unbalanced or get caught in your spokes.

With a little planning you too can become a bicycle commuter. Ride safely!
