Belize is banning single-use plastic items and requiring them to be phased out by April 2019, in an attempt to alleviate the environmental impact of plastic pollution.
The ban extends to plastic and Styrofoam, and includes items like shopping bags and food utensils, designed to be disposed of after one use. A taskforce for the ban says cleaning these items out of the ocean is a huge financial burden, especially when there are biodegradable options already on the market.
Belize residents are cheering the move, because the beaches are at risk from the massive floating plastic island in the Caribbean Sea. Also, discarded items can harm marine life.
The Ellen MacArthur Foundation predicts plastic in our oceans will outweigh the fish by 2050. Belize’s move won praise around the world by environmental agencies. More than 30 countries made similar moves.

United Continues Its Global Expansion
United Airlines keeps soaring to new heights, recently announcing another expansion of its leading global route network. The airline added new non-stop flights between Newark (EWR) and Marrakesh (RAK), Morocco; Tokyo (NRT) and Cebu (CEB), Philippines; and Houston (IAH) and Medellin (MDE), Colombia.
