New Mexican? Southwestern? Old Mexican? Whatever you choose to call the cuisine of Santa Fe, there’s no denying this town serves up the best comfort food north of the border. Based on what style of restaurant you’re looking for, here are some of the best options for dining out in Santa Fe, New Mexico.

Authentic Santa Fe: Gabriel’s

This hidden roadside gem is well-known among locals as the spot to find plates created in the spirit of the Southwest and Old Mexico. It may not look like much driving past on the freeway, but the narrow entry tunnel opens onto a charming outdoor patio and large indoor seating area bustling with lively waitstaff with trays of margaritas and sizzling fajitas in tow. Be sure to order the guacamole for a made-to-order tableside creation.

Festive: Coyote Cafe

Nestled amid the storefronts and boutiques of downtown Santa Fe, Coyote Cafe offers second-story views of ivy-covered adobe buildings and the Old Town sprawl. The indoor seating area is upscale and subdued, but the rooftop patio is bursting with color, music and New Mexican decor. The chile relleno is a must-order here, and don’t be afraid to ask for more of the homemade tortilla chips.

Upscale: The Compound

The Compound takes fine dining in Santa Fe to a new level. Chef Mark Kiffin was awarded James Beard Foundation’s Best Chef in the Southwest and his culinary mastery is apparent in every dish on the dinner menu. With superior service and a vibe of comfortable luxury, the restaurant is ideal for celebrations or a romantic evening in downtown Santa Fe. Order a few small plates to share before diving into the hearty entrees.
