Tips / Other

Let’s face it: New Year’s Eve can be a pricey holiday. If you want to have a night out with friends and family, a reservation at a bar, restaurant or event space could cost you. Instead of running up a big bill, consider these activities to do for free on New Year’s Eve.

Watch Fireworks

Many cities around the world host fireworks displays to ring in the New Year. Search online for a prime viewing location and post up there.

Go Out on the Town

Big cities host big parties — think Times Square in New York City. Oftentimes these types of events boast free entrance. Aspen, Colo., is home to a complimentary annual outdoor party. Chicago offers a family-friendly New Year’s Eve party. Search the tourism board website for the town nearest you to discover local free events.

Exercise

Go for a run or a long walk in your neighborhood. It’s a healthy way to begin the New Year and offers potential for some interesting people-watching while you work out.

Host a Potluck

Invite friends and family who also prefer to skip an expensive New Year’s to a low-key potluck at your home. With each person or family bringing a dish or beverage, cost is cut down considerably.

What to Expect at This Year’s Catskill Cuisine Fest

The second annual Catskill Cuisine festival is set to kick off soon, May 10–12. After the inaugural event’s success, this year’s festival is bigger than ever, with the one-day main event once again held at Bethel Woods Center for the Arts (historic site of the 1969 Woodstock Festival). Events, including a charity golf tournament and Mother’s Day brunch, will also occur throughout the weekend.

The Argosaronic Islands Are Calling

The Saronic or Argo Saronic Islands of Greece call travelers to explore its seven small islands and islets brimming with history, natural sites and more. With most easily accessible by boat, the islands’ proximity to ports of Athens make the Saronic Islands an ideal destination for those preferring shorter boat rides. In fact, trips from Athens ports to the islands take only between 10 minutes and two hours, depending on the island you choose, making them perfect for day or weekend trips.
