Tips / Travel

Parks, plazas and large open spaces abound in Europe, a continent full of cities that harbor fascinating people and even more fascinating places to watch them. The next time you find yourself in a major or minor European metropolis, park yourself on a bench and enjoy an afternoon of innocent ogling.

Jardin du Luxembourg, Paris

The gardens directly in front of the Luxembourg Palace on the city’s left bank feature copious trees under which to rest from the summer sun and spy evening joggers, children sailing toy boats in the fountains and elderly men engrossed in a game of chess. When the soleil sets and the park closes, grab a seat at a sidewalk café nearby for a glass of vino and further people perusing.

Naschmarkt, Vienna

This electric market is located just outside of the Ringstrasse and is an ideal way to sample Austrian wine before buying. Browse the farmers-style market before proceeding to the second-hand flea markets where goods of generations past are up for grabs.

Piazza Navona, Rome

Take a break from the throngs surrounding the Trevi Fountain and flock to this rectangular plaza. The fountain of the four rivers serves at the central point of the plaza while cafes and restaurant patios service espresso and vino to patrons who are in no rush.

Old Town Square, Prague

It is difficult to miss Prague’s most famous square where street musicians perform and horse-drawn carriages waltz in the shadows of the Astronomical Clock and Church of Our Lady before Tyn. Climb to the top of the clock tower for a bird’s-eye view of the people below.
