Each year in the spring, March Madness takes over the United States. For those unfamiliar, March Madness is a single-elimination basketball tournament among the teams in the National Collegiate Athletic Association. Teams are divided into regions, ranked and compete until they reach the Final Four (one team from each region) and then the ultimate winner.
Cities with popular NCAA teams take basketball seriously. If you’re a basketball or March Madness fan, consider planning a trip to one of these cities to experience the hype firsthand.
Home to the University of California, Los Angeles, the city has plenty of sports bars to watch the games with other fans. UCLA has won the title several times, so you’ll be sure to find diehard fans around town.
The University of Kentucky’s men’s basketball team has the most overall wins in NCAA history. See the Wildcats in action in Lexington.
Chapel Hill is a great small town to experience March Madness. The University of North Carolina’s campus is located here. Swing by the Carolina Basketball Museum during your visit.
Honorable mentions: Many other cities are home to winning teams. If you get a chance, check out Syracuse N.Y. (Syracuse University); Bloomington, Ind. (Indiana University); Storrs, Conn. (University of Connecticut); Lawrence, Kan. (University of Kansas); and Philadelphia (Villanova University).
