Tips / Destination

It is said the Rhine offers everything a river should: history, beauty, rugged terrain and mystery. You will have to determine these traits for yourself, but the facts remain that the Rhine is scenic. At around 766 miles long, it stretches across four countries and has nine UNESCO World Heritage sites along its banks. If you have always wanted to take a bicycle trip along a river, the Rhine is one to consider.

Switzerland, France, Germany and the Netherlands all contain part of the Rhine. Most likely, a trip will involve only one or two of these countries, but even so there are many routes from which to choose. Eurovelo 15 is a great resource for planning a bike trip along the Rhine. The cycling route along the Rhine is called EV15 and is comprised of the cycling routes of each of the individual countries in which the river flows. Whether you want to take on the whole route or just travel from its source to Lake Constance is up to you, but Eurovelo can give you some ideas of how to plan and offer package deals.

Even if you are an amateur, you can try a short, scenic route by considering a city-to-city trip such as Düsseldorf to Cologne. Just rent a bike and enjoy a three-hour ride.
