No one appreciates having their personal space invaded by clouds of insects, whether they bite or not. Luckily, Exofficio developed a line of clothing that wards away the annoying critters without making you look like you are wearing a HAZMAT suit.

The clothing uses insect-shield treatment containing a chemical called permerthrin to deter mosquitoes, ticks, ants and other critters. An added benefit of the Lumos hoody is that it provides extra protection for the head and neck, but its thin weave means you won’t overheat in hot climates. Thumb holes on the cuffs and a front kangaroo pocket mean you can get even more protection for your hands if the bugs are particularly prevalent.

The weave also means the hoody packs down small and light, and therefore takes up little of your precious packing space while providing essential protection. It is not advisable to dry clean the hoody, but the insect-shield treatments last for 70 machine washes, so you are more likely to wear out the hoody itself before the chemicals stop being effective.

As well as removing the annoyance of harmless insects, the Bugsaway clothing range could also help to prevent infection in tropical areas, where dangerous illnesses such as malaria and dengue fever are prevalent. Get your hands on a Lumos hoody from the Exofficio website. It sells for $65 and comes in a choice of colors, from Cayman blue to walnut brown.
