Fall can be a wonderful time to go on a camping trip. For starters, in most locations the weather changed from hot and humid to cool and dry. And you’re likely to get a burst of fall color, depending on where and when you camp.

But fall can also be tricky for many reasons. First, the weather is starting to change as the season slides toward winter. In fall, snow and cold temperatures can sneak up on unsuspecting campers, so it’s important to be prepared for a cold snap or a sudden change in weather. Bring layers and rain gear, and watch the forecast carefully for any chance of snow.

Fall also means shorter days, so another consideration is a light source. Bring a headlamp or flashlight with you, especially if you’re going to be hiking. Getting caught in the dark is a great way to get lost, so make sure you have that light source along with extra batteries.

And finally, if you’re hiking or camping in an area with bears, be aware they are active as they stock up for winter’s hibernation. They may be aggressive, so keep your food stashed safely and take proper precautions.
