The deep, narrow gash of Ross Lake was formed when the Ross Lake Dam was built along the Skagit River in the North Cascades — known as the American Alps for their sharp spires — in Northern Washington. Ross Lake is now a protected recreation area, where families and friends come to fish, explore the wilderness on foot and boat the lake, part of which extends across the border into Canada.
One way to experience the lake is to canoe it, renting from the Ross Lake Resort at the southern end of the lake and camping along the banks. There are also several islands you can choose to camp on, but you’re not allowed to collect firewood on these bits of land.
If you choose to go, contact the Ross Lake Resort to reserve your canoes sooner than later. Peak season (mid-summer) is busy and canoes often book up.
Next, be prepared for the weather to change, and quickly. A warm, sunny day in the mountains can quickly turn cold and rainy, so bring rain gear and wear layers. You’ll warm up as you paddle, and sweating can be a dangerous proposition if the weather changes.
Plan to come early. The lake funnels intense winds after noon, making morning the best time to paddle.
Don’t go farther than your physical abilities will take you. There are tons of campsites up and down the lake, on both sides, so be conservative if you’re a newbie and don’t go farther than you think you can.
Last, bring water-proof protection for your gear; your paddles will inevitably drip into the boat, and the last thing you’ll want after a day of paddling is a wet sleeping bag.
