Ross Lake, in the North Cascades of Washington, cuts a narrow sliver between breathtaking mountains. The lake makes for a secluded camping, boating and/or fishing trip, but it does take a bit of planning to do so.
The only lodging on the lake is Ross Lake Resort, and the lovely cabins here fill up fast. Reservations are taken one year in advance. The resort is open only from mid-June to October 31, so staying here can take some finagling.
Otherwise, you can camp at several spots around the lake. Some campsites are available first come, first served, and others require advance registration. Either way, you’ll need a backcountry permit from a nearby ranger station before camping out.
The Ross Lake Resort offers a water taxi that can ferry you to the campground of your choosing. Otherwise, you can hike in to several of the campgrounds; either way, you’re in for an adventure. You can also rent canoes from the resort and paddle to a campsite.
Fishing and hiking are both popular activities in and around Ross Lake. More information can be found on the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife website.
