Washington suffered a harsh summer: It was the hottest and driest on record, and a severe drought gripped the state. It was also the most severe wildfire season on record, with massive fires sweeping through large swaths of the state. The Okanogan complex fire, burning in Okanogan County, became the largest in the state’s history.
In some areas, smoke was thick enough to prompt warnings about limiting outdoor activities and air quality was affected in others. Entire towns were evacuated, causing the economies to struggle in these tourist-dependent areas.
But now that cooler, wetter weather has set in, the wildfire danger has dissipated and affected areas are returning to life. These areas are desperate for tourists, and they’re lovely places to visit this time of year. You’ll be doing yourself a favor as well as the areas you visit.
Among the best spots are Ross Lake in the North Cascades, the towns of Leavenworth and Wenatchee, and gorgeous Lake Chelan in eastern Washington. These areas boast excellent hikes, mild fall weather, outstanding scenery and activities like winery visits, fishing, great dining and boat rides. And many lodging spots offer off-season discounts this time of year, so you’re likely to get a good deal on your visit.
