Next year marks the 80th anniversary of the iconic Moomin stories, and Tampere, Finland, invites fans and travelers from around the world to celebrate. Tampere honors this special milestone with fun events throughout the year, letting visitors relive childhood Moomin memories.
Head to the world’s only Moomin Museum, located in Tampere, and immerse yourself in all things Moomins. This museum features illustrations by Tove Jansson, creator of Moomins, as well as 40 miniatures, tableaux about Moomin events and a small Moomin house. You’ll see nearly 2,000 exhibits on display, and Moomin Shop and Moomin Library are well worth a visit, too. Special to the anniversary, the museum debuts a new exhibition, Welcome to Moominhouse!
Moomin Museum is currently showcasing a temporary exhibition, An Artist’s Life, which looks back on Jansson’s life and milestones that shaped her career.
Anniversary celebrations kick off the Midwinter Magic festivities on Epiphany, where the museum, Tampere Hall and other cultural sites around the city honor Moomins. The Tampere Philharmonic Orchestra premieres composer Minna Leinonen’s new piece, inspired by Tove Jansson’s story, The Book about Moomin, Mymble and Little My. Additionally, Aug. 9 (Jansson’s birthday), Moomin 80 – The Great Birthday Party will be held at Tampere Hall.
