With most of the travel bans from the United States to Cuba lifted, American tourists have been flocking to the island. Cuba is known for its beautiful architecture, cuisine, cigars, rum, white-sand beaches and vibrant culture.

Though traveling to Cuba has become more accessible, there are still a few key rules and regulations travelers should know.

Travel is permitted with a visa under 12 categories of federal regulations spanning from religious, athletic and family visitation reasons.

Hotel vacancy may be slim, so tourists should consider having a flexible travel plan. Private home stays have become popular among travelers and offer a unique tourist experience.

Person-to-person travel expeditions can be successful in Cuba. With tours set up and group travel, travelers can experience Cuba with local knowledge and be sure to not miss any must-see salsa dancing clubs, cafes and artisan shopping locations.

Staying with locals or at a home-share property — much like Airbnb — is a popular way to make due when hotels are full.

Havana, Cuba’s capital city, is a popular and historic destination with bright stucco homes and ornate architecture. Salsa music, rum, on-site cigar rolling, tobacco field tours and cabaret are among just a few of the many must-try experiences. The famous Tropicana is one of the many draws to the island nation and tourists should expect lively culture and great nightlife.
