Crater Rim Boots from Danner

Oregon-based Danner has long been making great boots, though the brand became even more recognizable when the book and movie Wild came out — author Cheryl Strayed wore a pair of red-laced Danner Mountain Light Cascades on her infamous Pacific Crest Trail hike.

A more updated shoe — yet with hints of a classic origin — is the company’s Crater Rim boot. As with all of Danner’s exceptional products, the boot largely delivers on its promises. It features a durable waterproof leather upper and Gore-Tex liner that keeps your feet dry but lets them breathe. There’s a Vibram Bifida outsole that offers great traction, too. And it manages to be stylish while offering loads of great features.

The boot advertises ample toe room and a versatile fit, offering plenty of support while still allowing for side-to-side movement — and that’s vitally important when it comes to comfort. The boot wears well right out of the box, not needing much breaking in despite being tough and sturdy.

The Crater Rim is a bit heavy, especially compared to a few other types, and that can take some getting used to if this is your first tall hiking boot. Apart from that, this is a great boot — just make sure you don’t mind the weight.
