Delta’s Attempt to Speed Up Airport Security

The epic lines at airports around the United States of late are a serious worry for travelers. It seems there are constant horror stories on the news of travelers missing flights and spending the night on the airport floor because they were mired in a security line.

Airports and the Transportation Security Administration are throwing out ideas to speed things up, but travelers are still being warned to arrive at the airport even earlier than the previously held standard of two hours. Any solution won’t be immediate, so travelers are on their own to cope.

But if Delta Airlines has its way, things will get better fast. The company announced a plan to take matters into its own hands. The airline is investing $4 million in additional staffing at 32 airports around the country. These new staffers will be taking care of non-screening tasks, but the hope is that by speeding up other aspects of check-in, travelers will save time overall.

Delta is also plunking $1 million into two “innovation lanes” at Atlanta’s Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport, one of the worst for delays recently. The lanes will speed up the security process with technology like automated bin retrieval, similar to systems in place in Europe.
