Nicaragua is great for diving, especially on the Caribbean coast. Here are the best places to dive in Central America’s largest country.
Perhaps the best spot in the whole country is Little Corn Island. You’ll have to take a plane to get here from Managua, but it’s well worth the trip. There are dozens of dive sites dotted around the island, and the most famous include Blowing Rock, White Holes and Shark Hole.
Elsewhere on the Caribbean coast is Pearl Cays, an archipelago of 22 cays near Pearl Lagoon. It’s an idyllic spot to hang for a while, and there is plenty of marine life you can spot under the waves.
The Pacific Coast is more popular with surfers than divers due to poor visibility and large waves, but there are some diving spots to explore. La Flor, near the town of San Juan del Sur, is a nesting site for sea turtles.
In the interior of the country, divers should head to the volcano crater lakes of Apoyo and Xiloá. These are popular places for holidaying locals, and there are good dives you can make, too. Coming up from a dive and seeing the surrounding volcanoes is a truly amazing experience.
