You’ve heard the claims. Compression spots can do everything from help prevent serious medical complications to improve your sports performance. But do they really help give your overall circulation a boost and help you stay healthy while traveling?

According to the American Vein & Vascular Institute, compression socks and stockings can help improve some disorders, prevent serious medical complications and even help you stay comfortable day to day.

Who Are They For?
Although you may see the elderly wearing compression socks and stockings, they can benefit a variety of people. Pilots and travelers sitting for long durations, pregnant women, athletes, people who sit at desks all daydreaming about their next vacation and those facing surgery or dealing with post-surgery can all benefit from compression socks.

How Do They Work?
Slide on a pair of compression socks, and you’ll feel how snug they are. The idea is the pressure put on your legs helps your arteries take oxygen-rich blood to your muscles and flow freely throughout your body. This can ultimately help get the blood flowing back to your heart.

What Are the Benefits?
Aside from getting your blood pumping, compression socks can potentially protect you against Post-Thrombotic Syndrome, help prevent blood clots from forming in the legs and ease your pain. Many people who wear compression socks say their legs feel lighter while wearing them.

How Much Do They Cost?
Compression socks from a retailer like Amazon generally run in the $15 to $25 range, but, depending on any health conditions, your doctor might recommend something more robust. In this case, insurance may even cover the cost of compression socks. Whether they’re for everyday use during travel or recommended before or after a procedure, compression socks can potentially be billed as a medical expense.

If you’re sitting in an airplane, bus or train for hours, you might want to consider compression socks as a way to ease the discomfort and keep your blood flowing. And, fortunately, compression socks come in a variety of sizes and fun colors, so no one has to know they’re giving your legs a tight hug through your journeys.
