Situated just a few minutes from el Centro in San Miguel de Allende, Mexico, El Charco del Ingenio features a natural preserve of indigenous flora and endangered plants. Visitors get breathtaking views of local plants, along with the opportunity to enjoy a picnic from the concession stand or join an educational program. However, El Charco is more than just a botanical garden.
El Charco del Ingenio sprawls across 170 acres, featuring a legendary spring-fed pool, historic vestiges, wetlands and an impressive canyon with winding trails. You can spend an easy hour in the gardens strolling the flat terrain and watch the kids on the oversized stone slides, or wind down into the canyon for an ambitious trek. An on-site Solar Observatory, Dome and the Plaza of the Four Winds captures breathtaking views of the surrounding mountain ranges.
Peace and tranquility are infused in every area of El Charco, making it easy to forget el Centro is just a few miles away. In 2004, El Charo del Ingenio was proclaimed a Peace Zone by the Dalai Lama. A total of five Peace Zones were designated in Mexico to signify an area free of violence, weapons and dedicated to nature conservation and the development of community.
Visitors are wise to take the free shuttle from el Centro or a $2 to $3 taxi to the gardens. Although you can walk to El Charco del Ingenio from the center of town, the climb through the hills is aggressive and takes even ambitious travelers by surprise. Save your walking for exploring and soaking up the tranquility of the grounds.
