The Alcatraz Challenge is a unique way to experience some of the top tourist spots in San Francisco, Calif.. The Alcatraz Challenge is an aquathlon consisting of a 1.5-mile swim followed by a seven-mile race to the finish.

Athletes will begin by jumping off a group boat into the San Francisco Bay beside the former Alcatraz Prison. After a 1.5-mile swim away from the historic prison island, th competitors will run the last seven miles over the Golden Gate Bridge and passed brightly colored Victorian row homes to the finish line.

With a maximum participation of 500 people, this race is a more comfortable and spacious run than most. The adrenaline rush of a prison-escape-style race adds a level of competition that makes up for the other bodies many athletes will be used to.

The year-round fog that surrounds San Francisco will definitely be a factor, so those traveling for the race should keep in mind water temperatures.

Adult aquathlon registration costs $186 while the swim alone is $166. The iconic San Francisco landmarks at the end of the race make the Alcatraz Challenge a top event to try this spring, but registration fills up quickly.
