Et Kabüffke: The Place for Killepitsch in Düsseldorf

There is a certain delight in getting a drink from a bar so tiny your best bet is waiting at an outside window to be served. This is one of the charms of Et Kabüffke, the tiniest bar in Düsseldorf, or so the story goes. This little establishment is located in the Altstadt and has served the local delicacy of Killepitsch since its invention sometime in the late 19^th or early 20^th century (this is debated).

What does Et Kabüffke even mean? It is Rhenish, a dialect in northern Germany, for a small place and a small place it is. Located in the heart of Düsseldorf, this locale serves up drinks and atmosphere. The main reason to visit is a sampling of the city’s native version of Jaegermeister. Killepitsch is the product of more than 90 herbs and berries that have been distilled into a syrup-like drink served out of a shot or schnapps glass. The taste is not for everyone. It is more flavorful than Jaegermeister, spicy in the same nutmeg, clove and cinnamon kind of way, but with a distinctly sweeter twist.
