Taos, New Mexico, invites travelers to experience its dark side. The city in northern New Mexico is known for its art and cultural attractions, with its stargazing opportunities becoming increasingly popular.
Taos offers prime stargazing locations, with Rio Grande Gorge as one of the most popular. Tour operator Heritage Inspirations hosts a guided stargazing experience here. Guests will enjoy clear views of the Milky Way, as well as other constellations, star clusters and planets, while learning about the local culture.
With the future of the dark sky destination in mind, Taos County looks to a variety of initiatives and projects to protect the night sky.
Along with other local leaders, Taos County Commission works to reduce light pollution and preserve dark skies through exterior lighting ordinances and other measures.
Cielo Centro Observatory broke ground in November 2025 at University of New Mexico Taos. Once complete, the observatory will be home to the largest operable public telescope in the state, allowing students and visitors alike to witness thousands of celestial objects. The observatory will also function as an educational center, with hands-on learning experiences for school students and the general public.
