When most people think of Quebec, the mind wanders to Montreal.
However, there is plenty more to see in the French-speaking region of Canada, including Quebec City. With a UNESCO-listed Old Town, narrow cobbled streets and a strong sense of identity, the city is a great destination all year-round.
That said, it’s worth planning to visit during the Quebec Winter Carnival. The event will take place from Jan. 27–Feb. 12, at Place de l’Assemblée-nationale, home to one of the biggest winter carnivals in the world.
Take part in sleigh rides, ice canoe races and snow baths, or relax as you take in night parades, snow sculptures and shows. The 2017 edition will mark the 150th anniversary of Canada’s Confederation, with the event providing a theme to the winter carnival.
There has never been a better time to visit Canada, as it prepares for such a momentous occasion. Quebec City is one of the best places to get an insight into French-Canadian culture, and appreciate how Canada came together as a nation.
You can also tack on a few days in Montreal to boot, with just 160 miles between the two cities. While Quebec City is packed with history, Montreal is a bustling, modern metropolis with plenty of attractions.
Quebec City is around two hours in flight from New York, and Montreal is just 90 minutes away from the Big Apple. Check out the Quebec regional tourism website for more information on the winter carnival and other must sees for your trip.
