Food & Drink

Food tourism is on the rise, with more and more foodies traveling to enjoy local food experiences and identifying food as their primary and secondary motivations for choosing specific destinations.

According to a recent survey from the Adventure Travel Trade Association called Taste the Adventure, 71 percent of adventure travel itineraries have an experiential food focus of some kind and more than one third of global tourism expenditure is on food and beverage products.

The report highlights the results of a survey performed using ATTA’s database of tour operators, activity providers and travel agents in July 2015.

Key findings show cooking classes and visits to wineries, breweries and distilleries were ranked as the top requested activities, as reported by tour operators and travel agents. For operators offering food-focused itineraries, the average reported price per day for such trips was $472.

Here are a few tours combining adventure travel with delicious culinary experiences.

  • Tuscany Green, a family farm-based cycling and cultural experience, visits farms and wine cellars in order to discover the people behind your food as well as wine and oil tastings. Rates start from $3,995.
  • Bike Across Belgium, a beercycling tour through the flatlands of Flanders and rolling hills in Wallonia to local breweries. Rates start from $5,295.
  • An Epicurean Adventure Across Georgia’s Wine Country is a tour of the ancient country to discover its history and living traditions through its chefs, winemakers, artisans and musicians.
