Tips / Travel

Packing a few easy snacks and quick meal options can be a great time and money saver, whether you’re traveling on a budget or on a tight schedule. A few small items in your backpack or purse can make a big difference, as long as you pack the right things. Go for foods that won’t be affected by cold or heat, can withstand being jostled around and need little in the way of preparation.

If you’re looking for a quick morning fix, bagels and hard-boiled eggs are two breakfast items that can withstand a bit of rough and tumble. Cooking the eggs a day or two before and putting them in their own small plastic containers can save time on your way out the door, and they’re ready to be peeled and eaten on the go. If you don’t have time to grab lunch or dinner during your travel itinerary, try wraps rather than sandwiches to avoid smashed bread and use ingredients that don’t need to be refrigerated such as nut butters, fruit spreads, hard cheeses or cured meats.

Of course, you don’t need to buy any specialized containers to bring your favorite foods along — incorporate items’ original packaging for an easy container that can withstand the trip. Use any half-empty, re-sealable packages of nuts or dried fruit and add shredded coconut, pretzel sticks, granola or mini chocolate chips for an easy trail mix that doesn’t require an extra bag. Likewise, if you have a nearly empty container of peanut butter or Nutella in your cabinet, you can cut up some fruit, throw it on top, and seal the jar shut for a dip-able snack that won’t pop open or spill.

If you’re flying, make sure you put any prepared snacks in clear containers or bags. Any dips or sauces you want to bring along, of course, have to be under the typical 3.4 ounces.
