A new range of cosmetics offers to use live bacteria to clean our bodies, rather than soap and water.

The company behind the idea, AOBiome, wants consumers to think about what it means to be clean. For a long time, we associated being clean with a sense of sterility, but that complete absence of bacteria is not necessarily healthy for our skin.

With its Mother Dirt range, AOBiome proposes we spray live bacteria onto our skin in order to clean ourselves in a healthy, natural way. While modern soaps kill all of the bacteria on our bodies, Mother Dirt nurtures good bacteria which keep us clean.

If you can get your head around spraying live bacteria onto your body, Mother Dirt is a natural solution to the ever present problem of cleanliness. Mother Dirt products are sprayed onto your face, body and hair, with no need for running water. It’s great news for travelers and campers who may not have access to a shower for days at a time.

As well as practical applications in the wild and at music festivals, consumers reported long-term use of the products has left their skin and hair feeling softer and healthier. If you’re keen to try out the cleanliness revolution for yourself, head to the AOBiome website. The AO+ Mist costs $49, while the Face&Body Cleanser and the shampoo cost just $15.
