As most former study abroad students know, a semester abroad goes by quicker than a snap of the fingers. Before too long, you are back at your home university, pining for where you have been and what you have seen abroad. Some study abroad students even come home with regrets. In order to ensure your study abroad experience is as fulfilling as possible, here are a few ways to get the most out of your semester abroad.
Consider a home stay
In many cases, students are assigned to live with other students in apartments for their semesters abroad. While you can make life-long friends in this fashion, you aren’t exactly obtaining a local experience. If your program is offering a home-stay option, sign up. A home stay provides more language immersion and a more local experience.
Go as long as you can
A big regret of study abroad students is they don’t go long enough. It takes awhile to get used to a new country and to grow accustomed to the foreign locale. If you only study abroad for a week or two, you barely have enough time to get over jet lag, let alone learn something new about a far-off destination.
Take a local language course
Some study abroad programs don’t require you to a take a local language course. Even if it is not required, you should sign up for local languages courses and exchanges anyways. By learning the language, you will adjust better and also enrich your sense of where you are studying.
Travel locally
Many study abroad students touch down in their semester in Rome, only to never really see Italy at all. They spend the weekends traveling to London, Paris and Barcelona. In order to get the most out of studying abroad, try to travel locally where you are studying. You would hate to return home from a semester in Rome only to know nothing about Italy and its surroundings.

Insta FeedAre You Ready for the Final Switch to Real ID?
Yesterday, TSA began enforcing new identification guidelines, a change that’s been a long-time coming. Now, travelers must show a REAL ID-compliant, state-issued ID in order to fly on domestic flights, in lieu of a non-compliant driver’s license (some other forms of identification, such as passports, will still be acceptable).
