Baltimore’s National Aquarium is taking interactive to a new level with its latest exhibit, Living Seashore, which kicked off last month. One of only a handful of exhibits offering direct interaction with jellyfish, Living Seashore brings visitors on a journey from the sandy beaches to the ever-evolving Mid-Atlantic sea, allowing them to explore a variety of marine life within arm’s reach.
The interactive exhibit’s two touch pools include a variety of sea animals, including Atlantic stingrays, horseshoe crabs and moon jellies. National Aquarium interpreters greet visitors and are on hand to assist. Guests also learn more about the beach’s hidden treasures, touching hermit crabs, shell fragments and more on a discovery wall. A digital multi-touch table teaches about objects that wash up on shore.
With a focus on conservation, the $5.5-million exhibit focuses on animals and plants that share the beach with humans. Pledges to protect the ocean and its inhabitants can be made through the digital Shore Hero Conservation Station. Two years ago, the National Aquarium welcomed the $12.5-million Blacktip Reef, an Indo-Pacific reef exhibit and the first of several major renovations planned for the aquarium.
