Gondwana Encounters Launches New Antarctica Expedition

Gondwana Encounters recently announced the launch of a new, small-group adventure: Antarctica: Penguins & Polar Frontiers. The journey to the Seventh Continent is unlike any other, blending the cultural depth of Argentina with a voyage to the Antarctic Peninsula.

“We saw a gap in how most people experience the Antarctic,” said Jared Sternberg, founder, Gondwana Ecotours. “Most trips begin and end at the gangplank of a ship, leaving travelers to handle the complexities of South America on their own. Our mission was to create a fully integrated journey where our guests are supported by Gondwana leadership from the moment they land in Buenos Aires until they return home.”

The trip starts in the beautiful neighborhoods of Buenos Aires, then makes its way through the world’s southernmost city of Ushuaia, offering a stress-free transition into the icy setting of the South Pole.

The expedition is hosted by Gondwana’s leadership team including Sternberg; Eric Sealstad, co-owner; and Dani Catania, head of Guides and Operations. Catania was born and raised in Argentina and has lived in Ushuaia for more than two decades. With his 10 years of professional guiding experience and local expertise, he provides a unique insight into the regions, cultures and natural history.

The trip shifts gears once the ship crosses the Drake Passage. Guides and guests will go into exploration mode while they explore sculpted icebergs and glaciers aboard a Zodiac while looking for Gentoo, Chinstrap and Adélie penguins. Along the journey, the ship will dock in different areas to visit historic research stations; penguin colonies; and spots to see humpback whales, minke whales and leopard seals. Additionally, a guided sea-kayaking excursion is included in the trip’s price, allowing guests to paddle through the silent waters of the peninsula.
