Guyana is arguably home to some of South America’s greatest natural wonders. Stunning waterfalls, beautiful rainforests and sweeping mountain vistas make it a must for any adventurous tourist. Here are a few of the country’s greatest natural attractions.
Kaieteur Waterfalls
Kaieteur Waterfalls is rightfully considered the crown jewel of Guyana’s vast and beautiful ecosystem. More than 30,000 gallons of water cascade over the sheer cliffs into a 741-foot drop when at its peak. It’s one of the world’s largest and most powerful waterfalls and lies right in the heart of Kaieteur National Park.
Iwokrama Forest
Iwokrama Forest, nicknamed the “Green Heart of Guyana,” is one of the country’s largest regions of untouched natural beauty. The sweeping forest covers more than 1 million acres of land and holds some of the rarest species of plants and animals on Earth. It’s also a popular destination for outdoor thrill seekers.
Shell Beach
The aptly named Shell Beach covers an impressive stretch of 90 miles along Guyana’s shores. It’s littered with the remains of seashells and provides a home for four of the world’s rarest species of marine turtles. Between the months of March and July you can find thousands of Hawkbills, Greens, Ridleys and Leatherbacks setting up home.
Kanuku Mountains
The Rupununi Savannahs sit just below the Kanuku Mountains, creating one of the most jaw-dropping backdrops in South America. Considered one of the few remaining pristine habitats left in the Amazon, its unique biodiversity makes it the perfect home for a vast array of wondrous species. There are few better places on Earth to hike.
Mount Roraima
Mount Roraima has stood tall amongst the landscape of Guyana for almost 1,700 million years. The striking 400-meter-high sheer cliffs served as the inspiration for the movie Up, while the surrounding landscape moved Sir Arthur Conan Doyle to pen the celebrated book The Lost World. As one of the largest flat-topped mountains on Earth it provides views you won’t find anywhere else.
