Meet Pilot. From sci-fi to reality, Waverly Labs’ upcoming real-time translation hearable is breaking language barriers.
The Pilot enables users to hold conversations with one another regardless of their native tongue. You’ll now be able to switch dialects with the same ease as changing a channel. The futuristic kit consists of two Bluetooth earpieces. One goes in your ear and the other in the ear of your conversation partner. Your speech is passed through a smartphone app and you can finally speak French, English, Spanish, Italian or Portuguese.
Andrew Ochoa, New York-based chief executive officer and director of product development, Pilot, said the idea came to him when he met a French girl. An Indiegogo campaign for Pilot raised more than $3 million for development, allowing the time to select a manufacturing partner in China. Waverly Labs is now working to meet a full release date of May 2017.
The Pilot works by employing specially designed, dual noise-canceling microphones to filter out ambient noise from the sound of someone talking. The speech is passed through the smartphone app where layers of speech recognition, machine translation and speech synthesis occur simultaneously to reduce the lag time between the speech and translation to create a more seamless experience. The earpieces, when not used for translation, can be used to stream music.
Pilot will cost $299 at the full retail price. The price includes a second wireless earbud which can be used for music, a charging case and some languages. Waverly Labs plans to add support for other languages like East Asian, Hindi, Slavic, African, Arabic and Semitic in the latter half of 2017.
While other companies are working to develop real-time translation programs, the Pilot is unique in that it is the first wearable translator.
