Speakeasies have sprouted all over the country and opened their doors for modern guests to enter the antiquated atmosphere that was 1920s-era Prohibition. A few of these ‘secret’ bars have made names for themselves, despite attempts to remain hidden and discrete.
Noble Experiment in San Diego, for example, is hidden behind a wall of kegs. Just push the silver barrels stacked along a wall in Neighborhood, a restaurant on G Street, to enter the posh hideaway.
In the City of Angels, Lock and Key puts a fun spin on a tricky entry game. To access the dark bar filled with leather chairs, you must select the correct doorknob from a wall covered in various styles of doorknobs.
The Raines Law Room in New York City pays tribute to the law with the same name from the late 19th century that attempted to repress alcohol availability. Sexy cocktails, dim lighting and the fact only a few guests are allowed at a time make this exclusive bar a difficult one to crack.
Speaking of exclusive entries, Portland, Ore.’s, Circa 33 requires a secret code be entered into a book titled Mafia in the bookshelf. If successful, you’ll enjoy a quiet back bar with exquisite cocktails.
