High-End Smart Luggage from Raden

A reliable carry-on is crucial to a frequent traveler. While some luggage is better than others, offering multiple components, storage and gadgets, developers at Raden took a more measured approach: a smart suitcase.

Raden’s suitcases are of the hard-shell variety with the exterior made from a durable polycarbonate material. Measuring 14 inches by 22 inches by 9 inches, the A22 connected carry-on is a fascinating attempt at melding technological convenience with the simplicity of high-end luggage. For $295, the carry-on comes in several colors: white, black matte and gloss, hunter green, navy, light blue, light purple and light pink.

The bag’s exterior, almost bare, reveals the brand’s minimal design aesthetic. The top features a small handle to grip and a larger telescoping handle to extend. A TSA-approved lock is embedded near the smaller handle which works only by connecting the bag’s zippers.

One of the luggage’s major conveniences is the two USB ports readily accessible in the bags exterior. The ports are connected to a battery, which requires charging. The charging capability is only the beginning of the smart functionality of the A22. To access the rest, download Raden’s iOS app.

When opening the app, you’ll be asked to set your home airport, which will then provide you with information like weather and travel time. Tell the app you’re starting a new trip and you’ll begin to input the airport you’re departing from and flying to, airline, seat selection and more. The user is also able to weigh the bag by simply picking it up by the handle, holding it still and pushing a button on the app.

Opening the bag reveals an interior just as thought out as the rest of the bag. The zipper splits the bag perfectly in half, with two equally sized compartments. The internal compartments can be closed and secured with a zippered flap, each with its own pocket for small items. Opening one of the pockets, you’ll find a rolled amenity kit with a set of earplugs, eye mask and a flat USB cable for charging the suitcase battery.
