Mountains make popular hiking destinations all over the world. There is gorgeous scenery all around, trails abound and, if weather permits, there is no end to trail variety.
If you want to add a sense of danger to your mountainous hiking, you can look into hiking near, on and into active volcanoes.
Catch a flight to Hawai’i and get ready for a lengthy hike around Hawai’i Volcanoes National Park. Here, guests can hike to the tops of Kïlauea and Mauna Loa, a few of the most active volcanoes on the planet.
Another common volcano for hiking is Mt. Etna. You need a licensed guide to hike to the mountain’s summit. This famous mountain is located in Sicily and makes for a great hike if you go with experienced guides.
As far as dormant volcanoes go, the less courageous might be a bit more enthusiastic to hike without feeling like the entire world could possibly explode at any minute.
The Pacific Northwest is home to Mount Rainier. This mountain is visible from miles around and is especially fun to climb in the summer months, when the increased elevation keeps climbers cool during the ascent. Even by driving to the highest possible point, visitors can see the caldera and rest comfortably knowing the volcano is dormant.
At the core of the matter, hiking near volcanoes is no different from hiking any other mountain. Just don’t do anything silly like try to roast marshmallows on an open spurt of lava and everything will be fine.
