Theaters are where people go to escape from reality, even if for a brief time. Whether you’re seeing a movie or live performance, these spaces transport you to another time and place. Take in some history with your entertainment at these theaters in the United States.

Fox Theatre

When it opened in 1928, Detroit’s Fox Theatre was one of the largest in the world, with a capacity for more than 5,000 guests. The ornate design features Egyptian and Asian motifs. The theater currently presents films and special performances.

Radio City Music Hall

Best known for its Christmas spectacular featuring the world renowned Rockettes, New York City’s Radio City Music Hall has entertained the masses since 1932. The Art Deco building is home to a variety of performances and awards shows annually.

Thalian Hall

Opened in 1858, this theater is one of the oldest continually operating theaters in the country. Located in Wilmington, North Carolina, the building displays classic 19th-century architecture. Today, the theater hosts live theater, concerts, films, dance and other performances.

Walnut Street Theatre

This Philadelphia theater is the oldest in the country. Founded in 1809, it is a designated National Historic Landmark. With 50,000 annual season ticket holders, the theater hosts main stage performances, a more intimate studio theater, children’s theater and special events.
