How Apps Can Help You Become a Transportation Guru

Tips / Travel

For once, Google might not be the smartest kid on the block. When it comes to public transportation, other apps may be better choice than GoogleMaps.

Consider local apps your best friend. While most big cities have their own apps, such as the Los Angeles Go Metro App, not all of them are reliable. The best way to find the app of your dreams is to get local. If you’re in Los Angeles, try the NextBus App or www.nextbus.com. This useful app lets you search bus and subway routes at a particular location and is startlingly accurate about times. Since it won’t help you plan a multi-bus route, this app is great when used in conjunction with GoogleMaps. This free app is worth a download for anyone who’s spent too long waiting at a bus stop.

Another free app to check out is HopStop. This functional app gives directions (both biking and transit) and even estimates taxi fare. It functions in more than 600 cities around the world and, as an added incentive to forgo the car, tracks how many carbon emissions you save.

Shop around for apps and find one that suits your travel needs. The real question is, what did people do before apps?
